Description
The shrine of Our Lady of Grace or of San Bernardino is a religious building within the hamlet of San Bernardino which itself is located within the Cinque Terre National Park, high above Corniglia and easily visible from Corniglia’s cliffside patio viewpoints. According to historical sources, the current sanctuary building was built during the nineteenth century on the foundations of an ancient chapel built in the late Middle Ages . Together with the shrine of Our Lady of Montenero in Riomaggiore, the shrine of Our Lady of Health in Manarola, the shrine of Our Lady of Reggio in Vernazza and the shrine of Our Lady of Soviore in Monterosso al Mare, this sanctuary is part of the "Sanctuaries of the Cinque Terre”. The village of San Bernardino has only a few inhabitants and it is somewhat sad and eerie to visit the deserted lanes and see all the ‘for sale’ signs. The village is situated 385 metres (1175 ft.) above the sea and the view from the patio of the church offers a spectacular view of the Cinque Terre coast.
