Description
The beautiful pond at Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham, North Carolina, is often referred to as Duke Pond, or the Garden Pond. Located on the campus of Duke University, the gardens have a rich history dating back to the 1930s. The gardens are named after Sarah Pearson Duke, the wife of a prominent university benefactor, Benjamin N. Duke.
Central to many views in the Arboretum, this large Duke Pond offers numerous opportunities to enjoy vibrant waterfowl and other pond life. The pond is a prominent feature within the Doris Duke Center Gardens, which is part of the overall Sarah P. Duke Gardens. The pond is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and serves as a serene and picturesque setting within the gardens. The initial development of the gardens began in the 1930s, with the establishment of the terraced Doris Duke Center Gardens. Over the years, the gardens expanded and evolved, thanks to the efforts of renowned landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman and later, the visionary landscape designer Blomquist Garden of Native Plants was added. Today, Sarah P. Duke Gardens spans 55 acres and is divided into four main areas: the Doris Duke Center Gardens, Culberson Asiatic Arboretum, Blomquist Garden of Native Plants, and the Historic Gardens. The gardens offer a diverse and beautiful collection of plants, flowers, and landscapes, providing a tranquil and educational environment for visitors to explore and enjoy. As a testament to the dedication of the Duke family and the ongoing commitment of the university, Sarah P. Duke Gardens stands as a botanical gem that continues to thrive and inspire generations of nature enthusiasts and scholars alike when visiting the Raleigh-Durham area.
